Abstract Managing radical, disruptive, or discontinuous innovations has emerged as a hot issue. However, genuine radical innovation is very difficult to be successful in developing countries. Some technological innovations are not-so-radical from the viewpoint of advanced countries, but have made greater impacts on the society. This study introduces a new concept of high-impact technological (HIT) innovation, and tries to identify the processes of HIT innovation based on Korean cases. We define the HIT innovation as the innovation that has a high impact on national economy and society from the technological, market, and strategic/social aspects. This study deals with six cases of HIT innovation, such as DRAM, TFT-LCD, CDMA, ADSL, on-line network game, and portal community. Some aim at the localization and active learning of transferred technologies, while others are targeting for creating new markets. The results show interesting findings. First, HIT innovations can be realized through accumulating incremental innovations. Second, the processes of successful HIT innovations are characterized by parallel process of development, active technological learning, creative and autonomous organization, active utilization of external network, and systematic project management. Third, key success factors for HIT innovation are high and difficult goal setting, strong top management (or political leader) support and investment, successful institutional building, active capability accumulation, and innovation system that reduces technological and market uncertainties. In addition, the roles of key players including the government are very critical in promoting HIT innovations. This study can contribute to designing the national systems for promoting radical and high-impact innovations.
