We'd like to make an announcement of 2026 Summer Semester information as below. KAIST is running course registration system based on the randomly selected method for seasonal semesters as well as regular semesters. The beginning of classes is divided into 1st and 2nd period and course schedule is operated in three types in summer semester. Therefore, please be aware of the periods regarding course registration. Also, students on a leave of absence will be able to apply for summer semester courses as an auditing student.

1. Summer Semester Course registration 

A. Course list : 

* Portal( http://portal.kaist.ac.kr) → Academic → Academic Affairs → Classes → Offered Courses

* Course Registration System (https://sugang.kaist.ac.kr) → View All Offered Courses

  No same codes are used to offer week 1-4 classes and week 5-8 classes.

  One cannot retake week 1-4 classes with week 5-8 classes.

  Course evaluation, grade entry, grade posting, grade confirmation etc. are all processed by the same schedule with week 1-8 classes.

 

B. Eligible applicants and credits for the summer semester

 1) Eligibility for application : Enrolled students (except for students expected to graduate in August 2026) and students on an academic leave of absence (as an auditing student)

 

 2) Number of credits

 - Enrolled students : 9 credits, no limit on the number of courses

  A maximum of 9 credits (including research credits and AU) is allowed (applicable to undergraduate, master's and Ph.D. program students).

 ( However, undergraduate students can apply for up to 12 credits with the approval of their academic advisor and department head / Apply through Course Registration(Exceptions) menu during the course Add/Drop period)

 

 - Students on an academic leave of absence : 6 credits limiting the number of courses to 2 courses

  A maximum of 6 credits (including research credits and AU) is allowed per seasonal semester (max. 2 courses per semester (6 credits), max. 3 courses throughout the degree program (9 credits).

 

  Guidelines for Summer/Winter Semester Course Registration for Students on a Leave of Absence

 → Starting from the 2021 summer semester, students on a leave of absence will be able to apply for summer/winter semester courses.

 → Students on a leave of absence may apply for summer/winter semester courses as an auditing student. Procedures and tuition fees are the same as those for enrolled students. 

 → For students on a leave of absence, auditing is allowed only for summer/winter semester courses. A student can apply for up to 2 courses per semester(6 credits) and up to 3 summer/winter courses throughout their degree program(9 credits)

 → Students should apply for credit recognition for credits earned by auditing summer/winter semester courses before the end of their final semester. (Students cannot apply for credit recognition while on a leave of absence)

 

C. Course registration : Randomly selected system

1) Period : 2026. 5. 26(Tue) ~ 5. 29(Fri) 【4 days】

[Before random selection] From 12:30 to before 23:59 on May 26(Tue) (Open enrollment without ceilings for all the courses)

  May 27(Wed) : No registration is possible and random selection is processed.

  Randomly selected students list for the courses will be announced before 12:00, May 28(Thu)

 → Students will be randomly selected for the courses that exceed their enrollment ceilings; Randomly selected students list for the courses will be announced. (on portal)

 → Courses of students who are not selected will be automatically deleted on their system.

[After random selection] From 12:30 on May 28(Thu) to before 23:59 on May 29(Fri)

(Students may register for the remaining courses on a first-come first-serve basis)

 

2) System opening hours

[Before random selection] From 12:30 to before 23:59 on May 26(Tue)

[After random selection] From 12:30 on May 28(Thu) to before 23:59 on May 29(Fri)

(Students may register for the remaining courses on a first-come first-serve basis)

   You can also click on the "Course Registration" shortcut available on the portal.

 

4) Procedure : ①Honor Code → ②Check the class lists on Web → ③Register for classes on Web

① [Honor Code Pledge] : At the main page of course registration system, online signature is available on pledge to enhance sense of ethics and responsibility (*Consent is required once every semester from 10 days before the start date of course registration to the end of course add/drop period/ Effective from 2021 Fall semester).

 

② [Portal → Academic Affairs → Classes → View All Offered Courses] or [Course Registration System → View All Offered Courses]

 

③ Course Registration System → 'Course Registration' Click → 'Add' Click

 Check Course Operation Method: View All Offered Courses → Course Name → Check Remarks and Lecture Type

 

5) Matters to be attended while registering

① Students must apply for courses during the given period only.

 

② Students included in the randomly selected list (of the courses exceed their enrollment ceilings) cannot cancel the courses during the registration period.(However, during the Add/drop period, students may change or cancel their courses.)

 

③ Course Registration System requires a portal access (with PORTAL ID)

(For issues related to the account: Portal → My Page (top right icon) → My Info Settings → Personal Information Settings)

 

④ Students must obtain the course professor's approval online by up to three days before the end of the course add/drop period when registering for retake courses. 

- Online course retake approval period: Course registration period and no later than 23:59 on three days before the end of the course add/drop period. Please be aware that if you fail to obtain approval by the deadline, your retake course registration will be canceled automatically. 

 

- When the online course retake application has been denied by the course professor or automatically canceled due to non-approval within the deadline: students must either re-apply through the 'Course Registration (Exceptions)' menu or submit a completed application form (Academic Form No. 12 for Graduates) to KCB Academic & Student Affairs Team (through this email address) during the course add/drop period.

 

 For students on a leave of absence who wish to apply for summer/winter semester courses.

 → Students on a leave of absence may apply for summer/winter semester courses as an auditing student. Procedures and tuition fees are the same as those for enrolled students.

 → Students should apply for credit recognition of credits earned from audited summer/winter semester courses before the end of their final semester.(Students cannot apply for credit recognition while on a leave of absence)

 

 

⑥ Additional function to make ‘Wish List’ for desired courses: By adding a "wish" button in the list of courses offered at course registration menu, students can make and save a course wish list. The saved wish list will be displayed at the top of the list when viewing the offered courses (Note that courses in the wish list are not officially registered).

 

 

 Students who are expected to graduate this semester cannot register for seasonal semester.(Except for the students who meet graduation requirements by taking special seasonal semester courses)

 Course registration guide for special seasonal semester 

 

Students can graduate in the semester with seasonal semester if they meet the graduation requirements by taking seasonal semester courses that are operated within 3 weeks of the first half of the seasonal semester.(▶Refer to list of courses offered for Summer semester/ Check the Remarks column/ Limited to courses operated during 2026.6.29.~2026.7.19If you register for a special seasonal semester course, please notify your department official who is in charge of graduation assessment so that the courses can be reflected in your graduation requirements.)

 

 

 Due to the use of the new course code, you can apply for Special Topic courses with different subtitles during the course registration period. (Note: If the subtitle code is not assigned to the grade of an existing special Topic course, you must first complete the subtitle code application through the [Academic Affairs] > [Grades] > [Apply for Subtitle Code] menu.)

 

 Retaking a special lecture course is only permitted if the subtitle and subtitle code are exactly the same. For courses taken prior to Fall Semester 2024 that did not have subtitle codes assigned, students must consult with the department and obtain the appropriate subtitle code before applying for retake  

 

 

2. Payment for Regular and Retake Summer courses 

A. Student who needs to pay : 

 *Tuition Fee: Applicants who apply for first or retake of undergraduate courses

 *Retake Fee: Applicants who apply for retake of undergraduate or graduate courses

 Undergraduate students applying for an “Individual research" course must pay a tuition fee for the course

 Graduate students: 

- Tuition fees are waived for graduate-level courses. However, if you register for an undergraduate course or 

any cross-listed 40000-level course (open to both undergraduate and graduate students), the full tuition fee must be paid.

- For retake courses, retake fees must be paid

 

B. Payment period

  1st Period (Week 1~8, Week 1~4 classes) : 2026. 7. 2(Thu) 12:00 ~ 2026. 7. 10(Fri) 23:55

  2nd Period (Week 5~8 classes) : 2026. 7. 30(Thu) 12:00 ~ 2026. 8. 7(Fri) 23:55

 

C. Amount

 * Payment for regular courses : 50,000 won per credit / AU

 * Payment for retake courses : 50,000 won per credit / AU 

   In the case of retaking an undergraduate course, the retake fee should be paid in addition to the tuition fee

 ex) Students retaking a 3 credit course (undergraduate course) should pay 300,000 won [(50,000 won * 3) + (50,000 won * 3)]

 

D. Payment method :  Log-on to Portal(https://portal.kaist.ac.kr) → Access ’Academic’ → Academic Affairs → Registration → Breakdown of Fee Payment Details→ Confirm Year/Semester setting and click ’Lookup’ of the Notice of Payment → Select bill type, then click ‘Bill Print’ → Confirm the Virtual Account Number/Amount and pay for it.

 

 Students can retrieve the Notice of Payment from 2026. 7. 2(Thu) / 2026. 7. 30(Thu), 12:00(pm).

 

E. Processing of students who did not pay for tuition fee : If tuition fees are not paid within a designated period, the course shall be canceled. (Marked "W" on their transcript)

 

 

3. Summer Semester Course Add/Drop 

A. Course Add/ Drop Period

  1st Period (Week 1~8, Week 1~4 classes) : 6. 24(Wed) ~ 7. 1(Wed)

  2nd Period (Week 5~8 classes) : 7. 22(Wed) ~ 7. 29(Wed)

  Even if you didn't register for any courses in the initial registration period, you can still apply now (within the enrollment limit). However, please note that course registration will not be possible after the Add/Drop deadline, so be sure to adhere to the schedule.

 

B. Opening hours of course registration system

[Graduate] From 09:30 on the first day to before 23:59 on the last day of each course add/drop period

→ Course Add/Drop available all time during the period

 

C. Procedure : Course Registration System (https://sugang.kaist.ac.kr) → 'Add new classes or drop/change classes at ‘Course Registration’ or ‘Course Registration(Exceptions)’ Menu. 

 

1)‘Course Registration’menu : Select Course → Add Courses with ‘Add’ button or Drop the courses with ‘Delete’ button

 

2)‘Course Registration(Exceptions)’menu : Select Course → Select Application Type & Reason for Application → Click Request

 If the approval of the course professor is required, such as courses exceeding enrollment limit, use the Course Registration(Exception) menu.  When you drop the course, do not use the Exceptions menu. You can cancel directly.

 

 ‘Course registration(exception) menu will be closed two days before the course Add/Drop period ends. Any applications that have not been approved by two days before the end of the Course Add/Drop period will be automatically canceled. Students must take necessary measures before the deadline.

 

 Once Course registration(exception) menu is closed, students who wish to make changes to their course registration must submit a course Add/Drop application in paper form (No.12_Graduate (Link) including the course professor’s signature to the KCB Academic & Student Affairs Team (through this email address) within the course Add/Drop period.

For week 1~8 and 1~4 classes, July 1st, 18:00 / For week 5-8 classes, July 29th, 18:00

 

4. Summer Semester Course Withdrawal 

A. Course Withdrawal Period

  1st Period (Week 1~8, Week 1~4 classes) : 2026. 7. 2(Thu) 12:30 ~ 2026. 7. 10(Fri) 23:59

  2nd Period (Week 5~8 classes) : 2026. 7. 30(Thu) 12:30 ~ 2026. 8. 7(Fri) 23:59

  During the course withdrawal period, only dropping courses is permitted. Withdrawing from courses after this period is not allowed.

  ‘Course registration(exception) menu will not be used for the course withdrwal. You can cancel directly.

 

B. System opening hours : From 12:30 of the starting day of the drop period to before 23:59 of the end day of the drop period 

 

C. Procedure : Course Registration System (https://sugang.kaist.ac.kr) → drop classes at ‘Course Registration’
