Hello,
My name is Jason Kang, andI recently graduatedfrom the University of Michigan. with a degree in Industrial and Operations Engineering (M.S.).
I have several questions regarding the application process for the M.S./Ph.D Management Engineering program.
1. As a graduate from a foreign university, are there extra requied documents?
2. Where can I find the required documents for the application? i.e. resume, recommendation letters, etc.
3. Are the classes taught in Korean or in English?
4. I have a M.S. degree. When I apply for the Management Engineering program, am I applying for both M.S. and Ph.D program? Or can I skip the M.S. part and go straight into the Ph.D program?
5. I have heard that there is a way to fulfill the military duty by completing a 3 year Ph.D program in KAIST. Is there such a thing - or something similar? If so, could I please get more information regarding that?
6. What is the cost of the program? Are there scholarships available? Often in the States, there are grants, fellowshipsand teaching positions available fordoctoral students so that they do not have to pay for the school. Plus, they get paid while doing researches and teaching classes as TA"s. I am wondering if there are such opportunities at KAIST.
Thank you, and have a wonderful day! :)
Sincerely,
Jason Kang

1. As a graduate from a foreign university, are there extra requied documents?
2. Where can I find the required documents for the application? i.e. resume, recommendation letters, etc.
You can find the inquired informationat -> http://admission.kaist.ac.kr/
3. Are the classes taught in Korean or in English?
Most courses in management engineering are tought in Korean, but almost of all class materials are written in English e.g. academic journals, textbooks etc.
4. I have a M.S. degree. When I apply for the Management Engineering program, am I applying for both M.S. and Ph.D program? Or can I skip the M.S. part and go straight into the Ph.D program?
I think you can directly apply to Ph.D program if youhave plan to studyassociated field with your M.S. degree(SCM, etc.). However, if you want to study and research in another field like finance or accounting, then I recommend that you apply to M.S. program.
5. I have heard that there is a way to fulfill the military duty by completing a 3 year Ph.D program in KAIST. Is there such a thing - or something similar? If so, could I please get more information regarding that?
Yes, there is.
If you enter the Ph.D. program then you will be enlisted. After finishing your Ph.D. course works(almost 2 years), alternative military duty will be started for 3 years. You prepare your thesis like other Ph.D. students during that time.
6. What is the cost of the program? Are there scholarships available? Often in the States, there are grants, fellowshipsand teaching positions available fordoctoral students so that they do not have to pay for the school. Plus, they get paid while doing researches and teaching classes as TA"s. I am wondering if there are such opportunities
If you enter the Ph.D. program, you can take fellowship scholarship (450,000 per month)and get paid from TA also.
The cost of the program per each semester like below.
M.S. program : approximately 5,500,000
Ph.D. program: approximately 500,000
Thanks
(Every cost I mentioned is Korean Won)

Thank you for your kind and detailed reply!
I have a couple more questions.
First, regardingthe question number 4:
As a student who have a Bachelor of Science in Financial Mathematics and Statistics and a Master of Science in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the Univ. of Michigan, do you recommend that I apply to thePh.D program or the Master"s program? I am interested in the Management Engineering field. Is there a subfield in this field?
Second, regarding the question number 5:
So including the military service period, will the Ph.D degree take about 5 years then?
Youmentionedthat one would preparehis thesis while doing the military service. Do many people do this?
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Jason Kang

-> The Management Engineering refers to the name of our major. Put differently, management engineering means just a business school. There are 7 specific fields in our school. (Accounting, economics, finance, organization & strategy, marketing, IT management, SCM and management science). You need to select one of them first.

-> You can easily think that you can take military duty through our Ph.D. program. You can study like other students who finished their military duty. 2 years for taking courseworks, normally 3 years for preparing thesis for graduation. Many Ph. D. students are doing this.
